How to use an online word counter free: complete how-to guide

Whether you are hitting a 500-word essay target, trimming a meta description to 160 characters or checking keyword balance for search, this counter gives you every number in one pass.

  1. Step 01

    Paste your text

Drop in an article, essay, email or product description. Counting starts immediately — there is no Submit button and no page reload.

  2. Step 02

    Read the live metrics

Words and characters are highlighted first, followed by sentences, paragraphs, lines, average word length and reading and speaking time.

  3. Step 03

    Clean up whitespace

Use Remove extra spaces to collapse double spacing and trim edges, or Strip all spaces when a form counts only visible characters.

  4. Step 04

    Check keyword density

Scan the density chart to confirm your target phrase appears often enough to be relevant but not so often that it reads as stuffing.

Frequently asked questions

How to use an online word counter free?

Paste or type your text into the box above. Word, character, sentence, paragraph and line counts update instantly as you type, together with estimated reading and speaking time. There is no sign-up, no limit and no cost.

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time assumes an average silent reading speed of 225 words per minute, and speaking time assumes 130 words per minute, which matches a comfortable presentation pace.

What is keyword density and why does it matter?

Keyword density is how often a word appears relative to the total word count. For on-page SEO, keep your main keyword natural — usually between 0.5% and 2% — and let related terms carry the rest of the meaning.

Does the character counter include spaces?

Both figures are shown. Use characters with spaces for social platforms and meta tags, and characters without spaces when a system counts only visible glyphs.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. The counter is pure client-side JavaScript. Your text stays in your browser tab, which makes it safe for drafts, contracts and unpublished content.
